Building an Emergency Fund—Even While Paying Off Debt

One of the most common questions people ask is, "How can I save for emergencies when I'm already trying to pay off debt?"

The good news is that you don't have to choose one or the other. With a simple strategy, a few habit changes, and the right mindset, you can make progress on both.

If you're starting from scratch, begin by building a small emergency fund with a goal of saving about one month's worth of essential living expenses. During this time, continue making at least the minimum payments on your credit cards and other debts. Once you've reached your initial savings goal, shift your focus toward paying down your credit card balances by paying more than the minimum each month.

If your credit card debt is significant and will take longer to pay off, consider alternating your priorities. One month, put extra money into your emergency fund while making minimum debt payments. The next month, direct that extra money toward paying down your debt while pausing additional savings contributions. This balanced approach helps you prepare for unexpected expenses while steadily reducing what you owe.

Five Ways to Grow Your Emergency Fund

  1. Treat Savings Like Any Other Monthly Bill - Decide on an amount you can comfortably save each month—whether it's $10, $25, $50, or $75—and make it a non-negotiable part of your budget. Consistency matters more than the amount. As your financial situation improves, gradually increase your monthly contribution.
  2. Live One Raise Behind - When you receive a raise, resist the urge to increase your spending. Instead, direct all or part of the additional income into your emergency fund. You'll continue living comfortably while building long-term financial security.
  3. Automate Your Savings - One of the easiest ways to save is to make it automatic. Set up a recurring transfer from your checking account or have a portion of your direct deposit automatically deposited into your savings account. When the money moves before you have a chance to spend it, saving will become effortless.
  4. Turn Clutter into Cash - Take a walk through your home and gather items you no longer use. Host a garage sale or sell them online, then deposit the proceeds directly into your emergency fund. You'll free up space while giving your savings a meaningful boost.
  5. Think of Your Emergency Fund as a Safety Net - Imagine facing an unexpected job loss, major car repair, or medical expense. How would you cover the bills? An emergency fund provides peace of mind and helps you weather life's surprises without relying on credit cards or loans.
